new Pite

Crystal Pite director of Kidd Pivot and resident choreographer at Netherlands Dance Theater is part of new mixed rep company program called Traces along with other choreography by Marco Goecke and Jiri Kylian. Posted below is a behind the scenes video of Pite working with the dancers from NDT along with Marco Goecke's new work.

I almost feel bad because judging by the videos I am more interested in the work of Goecke because it looks very interesting and fresh. Not that Pites work is not but i do enjoy seeing young bloods.

The Second Person

Yet another work set by Crystal Pite on the Netherlands dance Theater. Pite is not only one of my favorite artist/future babies mamma but she is also the resident choreographer with the company and still has her company Kidd Pivot.

Multi-tasking folks.

The You Show

Crystal Pite
or as I like to call her "my future babies mamma" has a new work for her company Kidd Pivot called The You Show. Judging by the clips and the little I have heard about the production its cool to see her use her dancers as modern day super heroes. Look at the part with Jermain flapping his cape like Tetsuo from Akira or the end of the video with her dancers turning into Voltron like Giant Robots. This women never ceases to amaze and she only gets better with time and thats why we should be together!

If you ever get the chance to catch any of her work do yourself a favor and buy tickets. Nothing better than the real thing.

enjoy.

Female Dance makers.

Earlier today i was thinking about how most of my favorite dance makers are for the most part Female. A departure from the theory that Choreography is a male dominated field. Im not gonna argue and say that there aren't more male choreographers (does not mean they are any good) out there but it seems to me that the people who are starting to make significant impacts and who are worth there salt are women! Something that i have noticed over the past couple years is that most of the shows that i have been to or student choreography showings is that the women seem to be making the best work.

A great example to support what i am talking about is looking back in dance history which i had to study as a student at the North Carolina School of the Arts is all of the female pioneers of modern dance. Martha Graham a trail blazer of American modern dance right along side Merce Cunnningham and Paul Taylor. Her technique is still being taught in schools all across the globe and her impact is still felt to this day not too mention her company is still performing her reps. There would be no Batsheva Dance without her. Next Pina Bausch who started Dance Theater incorporating text, speech, pedestrian gestures and film to her movement. Down the line you have Twyla Tharp who was one of the first Resident artist at American Ballet Theater under the direction of Mikhail Baryshnikov whom was the artistic director at the time and the one to appoint her.

Now we have a whole new crop of women who are making splashes in the dance world. My favorite choreographer Crystal Pite not only is a world renowned choreographer with her own company Kidd Pivott but she is also artistic associate at the Netherlands Dance Theater with her rep in some of the best contemporary companies out there. Camille A. Brown also a NCSA alumni has her second work being performed with Alvin Aliey this season has also done work for Hubbard Street, Philandanco. She now has her own company too with rave reviews. There also a lot of new Females choreographers on the rise like Emery Lecrone who has staged work with Oregon Ballet Theater, North Carolina Dance Theater and is on fast track to doing a lot more. One of my personal favorite women out there is Celia Rawlson-Hall whom has the potential to become the next Bausch.

Next year im encouraging one of my dancers Alex Jenkins to start developing her own works because its important that she gets the experience because i see that there is a talent there and its always good to have someone help motivate you.

As a male choreographer i know that i have the talent to do great original works because i have the chops to do it but the bar that im trying to reach has been set by all of these great women. It would be an honor and pleasure to share the stage with any one of them.

heres a video of Crystal Pites work with Cedar Lake.

Most inspirational of 09: Crystal Pite

2009 marks an incredible year for me in terms of artistic revelations. 10 years in the making. Finally found my own voice and working style, which to me translates to honesty. Honesty as in not trying to be like anyone else but to delve into yourself and environment to find inspiration in between both worlds.

Working as an artists over the past few years I have not been so impressed or inspired by anyone since Alonzo King which was 8 years ago while I was still a student. Fast-forward 8 years later… I find Crystal Pite. The easiest way for me to sum the impact of her work on me would be the same comparison to hearing Jimi Hendrix play the guitar for the 1st time or see Micheal Jordan on the basketball court. "Game changers" i call them and I had that same sensation with her work. Pites usage of the classical vocab mixed with modern, isolations that one can easily see a Hip Hop suggestion mixed with a sense of humor makes her work stand out in a very over saturated pool of artists. Her work is able to cross boundaries with simplicity and ease while the work is actually very physically demanding. Everytime i show someone who has never seen work i see the same reaction everytime. Amazment. Pite is currently associate choreographer of Netherlands Dance Theatre and artistic Director of her own company Kidd Pivot where she dances as well. If you catch the oppertunity to see her work being performed i highly advise you to go and see it for yourself. Im sure the word Amazing might pop into your head.

Ten Duets on a theme of rescue by Cedar Lake

yet again, i found more joints online by my future babies momma Crystal Pite. Kidd Pivot was recently in Nashville performing Lost Actions so i told my good friend Mr. Chris Stuart to go check them out. He texted me that they were the most amazing thing he had ever seen in a long time and said that i should have seen the show. He told me that his jaw was agape the entire time. More importantly me being the selfish basterd that i am he said that Pite and i share the same kind of movement transitions which is the biggest compliment i heard all year.

shout out to mr. Stuart!

hola.
