R.I.P. Pina Bausch

Acclaimed German dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch has died at the age of 68. The recipient of numerous awards and prizes, she left her mark as an innovator in the hybrid genre of "Tanztheater," or dance theater.

I keep thinking how much this week sucks. Im not going to list all of the people that have passed away this week aside from Micheal Jackson because he directly impacted my life. Pina Bausch a modern dance pioneer/ avante garde artists took me a while to get into but her influence can’t be denied. Her usage of set using "form and function" has been a hallmark of hers and numerous other dance companies/choreographers around the world. I’m currently working with set design so ive had been effected through osmosis. Of course I appreciate her work and wish that I saw her company perform last year in Berkeley. Bausch has set the stage for artist such as myself because if i decide to go to the far left and then cut right i can do so because she is the trail blazer for experimental works.

With all the craziness going on in the world right now we should try and take the time to tell the people that we love, admire, or even just friends with what they mean to us. This week is a reminder that life is so fragile and nothing should be taken for granted. You just never know what might happen. I want to take the time to thank all of my family, friends, dancers, supporters and everyone else who have helped me make my dreams come true. Everyone that I have worked with I want to say thank you for your time and energy. Life really is a blessing. Life is what you make of it. I have no money or budget but that has not stopped me for a second to get my dreams out. If you believe that you can do something DO IT! If you fail, at least you tried and you know that you gave it your all. Also we should try to focus on the positive not the negative. It’s too easy to get down or bring others down if your having a bad day but what does that accomplish? Smile at someone today. Watch how contagious a smile can be.

Putting out the good vibes for ya’ll.

R.I.P. Micheal Jackson

Dont know what to say about this and i hope that this is not true. Multiple sources are suggesting that Micheal Jackson is dead from a cardiac arrest. Jackson is one of the largest most beloved american icons. He has inspired so many artists and was a treasure to all of us. Personal issues aside this man was one of the greatest talents ever. Micheal Jackson is and always will be the KING OF POP!

thoughts and prayers go to all family friends and fans of the singer.

Kidd Pivot part 2

Im still obsessed with Crytal Pite and her company Kidd Pivot. A good friend of mine got the chance to see Pite rehearse with NDT while he was on tour in Europe this summer. He spoke volumes of her work and all of the amazing dancers. Dont be surprised if you catch me in Jacobs Pillow this summer to watch KIDD Pivot perform. YEAH!

NTSC

James Kendall Teauge
is a wonderful person, a tremendous talent and great friend of mine who is leaving the bay far too soon.

We have lived/chilled/worked together for the past couple years and it his absence wont go unnoticed. Ive been saying good-bye to close friends and family my entire life. Comes with the territory of growing up in Art School yet it does not get any easier. You learn ways to get over missing a person but it the void never fully gets filled.

Tomorrow, I’m sending Kendall off with a good bye that is too appropriate for the moment. He will be dancing for me one last time and i want everyone to tune in and be able to share this wonderful talent. Anyone who has been close with Jeezy will be able to watch him dance live via Ustream and leave comments. There are a good many of you that he has not been able to say good bye to so this is his chance of "talking to you after it too late from my videotape."

We will be streaming June 23rd @ 6:00pm pac time from Studio G.

Tune into this blog site and see what we will be missing here in the bay.

In the box

Today I feel like absolute boo boo cakes. Thinking that a little “R & R” will hopefully do the trick for me. I’ve been on the grind over the past few months getting ready for this fall. This fall will be the 1st time that we have produced a full evenings worth of work with some other Bay Area Artists and choreographers. For me this will be the 1st time that ive ever done a 20min joint. It’s not that making a longer work is really that hard for me but it has to be done well, which leads me to my point.

Why work on something if there is no personal meaning behind it? Don’t you find it annoying if you are watching a movie and it ends without giving any real closure? Or if you are reading a book and it kind of spins around itself? I want to make something that has personal connection and like any good story have a beginning, middle and end. The viewers need to be able to follow what’s going. Im still story boarding/brainstorming but as of right now I have 1 section that is already completed and another that needs to be worked out. We are going to be getting sets built that are fully functional so that the dancers can use the space as part of the movement along with some projections/multi-media in the background not too mention lighting and costumes. As of late ive been researching (Youtube) various videos and clips of different companies, musicians, concerts, films and artists that I enjoy to see what works. Not too mention going through our personal catalogue of over 40 dance films/concert dance to see what works for us and see how to incorporate a lot of the un seen works into the show. also been picking the brains of a lot of different people mostly non dancers to see what they enjoy. Focus grouping. Below are a couple clips that I want to show just for context

The clip Chiamara is a 2nd installment in a trilogy titled “Br002”. The reason for me showing this is to show that without proper context the film exists only within they’re own time and space. Once placed with something else such as stage they can take on a whole new life. I don’t know in what capacity that we would like to use these as of the moment so I am going to travel to DC this summer and work on some new joints with Dr. Bacon with a clear intent in mind.

Br001 is the 1st part in a 3 part series of me doing improv. They work well once seen all together. No one aside from us have seen them all togehter. Trying to figure out how to best re lease them

Ballons seems to be a fan favorite. Hands down the easiest to make. Took me one good idea that i had on a plane and 5min to choreograph. I spoke with Dr.Bacon about the concept while he was intown and this unplanned shoot went down in a couple hours.

one question that i have for you is this: what do you think about context vs. Art for arts sake?

what would you like to see more of?

thanks. Glad that thus far peeps have been impressed with the work.

Hammer Pants Dance

Last week-end i got the chance of a lifetime to choreograph on 10 drunk strangers at 2am. I was so stoked on it cause the drunken stumblers were stoked on it. Told my friends about the incident and my boy Jeezy(needs to get on here more often) showed me this gem of a video.

I want to break out my old "Hammer Pants" but looks like i missed the boat.

Seems like an annual thing:)

Today marks the day off days. My number 1 celeb crush Natalie Portman has turned one year older, and 1 year closer to me, even though I am technically younger. Natalie and I have a strange relationship. I don’t know how but my friends seem to believe that I masturbate to Garden State, which is false so I might as well clear that up now MARTYN!

Last year I blogged about if I were to meet her she would fall madly in love with my quirky sense of humor and magnetic charm. A few paragraphs in I switched tones and got realistic. She would more than likely hate me cause im egotistical and would throw meat at PETA only cause I would think that its funny. Last February a magical thing happened, I had the chance to meet Natalie Portman with my friend who was touring in LA with her respective dance company. I was soo excited to finally meet Natalie and was telling all of my friends about it while placing bets that I would at least make out with her. FUCK NO! My plane arrived 15min late while the ride that was going to the house in the hills was not able to wait for me. I ended up going back to the hotel room alone and fell asleep until my friend came back from the party and hanging with Natalie. Oddly enough I did not care. Am I maturing too? Strange.

Inspirations: Camille A. Brown

(Camille)

Camille A. Brown is one of the choreographers/performers whom you know will end up making a huge splash in the dance world. Looking at her already impressive resume she already has. Brown danced for Ronald K.Brown and has choreographed for Hubbard Street, Philandanco and Alvin Ailey, all in her twenties. I remember her when i was a freshman at NCSA and she was a senior. I would hear all this buzz about her dancing and her work. At that moment in time i was coming from a strictly classical background and was not too interested in modern dance which interesting cause i was a modern major. And i digress...Every spring semester all of the seniors in the modern dept had to do weeklong performances titled "Emerging Choreographers". "Emerging" is the chance to work on new material that you have full control over concerning dancers, music, costumes and set. We all considered it a right of passage and eagerly awaited Emerging so we can see what our classmates have been working on and it inspired all of us lower classman to strive and work harder (not me at the time). As i said Camilles piece had all the buzz going around campus. By the time "Emerging" had come around i had already not been invited back into the program because i was more or less a little punk bitch with no real direction and still not feeling modern or contemporary dance. In class the floor combination would start right and i would be going left. Modern for me then was way more restrictive and less free then ballet and i would never let it on back then but the teachers intimidated the shit out of me so it was even harder to focus cause i had all this pressure built up. Not gonna lie the principals that were being taught to me by the teachers with trying to be "organic" and “transition” talk simply did not register with me. Sounded to me like hippy talk. I had no clue what they were going on about.

Finally, we had made it to the "emerging" week and all dancers were required to go to all dance performances and more or less the whole 1st half i was not to thrilled with. Simply did not care for the movement or dancing. I was too young to understand the simple complexities back then but a strange thing happened. After being utterly bored during the performances Camilles piece went on last, and rightly so. The dancers in her “emerging” were all upper classmen with a couple men from my class. Once the dancers took stage i was floored. The entire performance my focus was razor sharp looking onstage while trying to absorb every piece of movement. The music was so heart felt and the dancers were so giving with their movement while still being hungry to eat up as much space as possible. Watching her choreography was a turning point for me. The performance went on for a solid week after the 1st show i saw and i snuck in every night right before Camilles piece so that i could watch it again and again. It’s weird that the teacher’s weren’t able to get through to me but seeing what she had presented onstage i finally understood what they were getting at. All of the principals about releasing while maintaining strength and control made sense. Watching the dancers with their wild abandon yet still maintaining all control, I got it. I was so moved and touched by her work that it made me focus and snap out of me being a little punk kid who had a lot of potential but never had the focus to push it. Now I was ready to work. Now there was something to work towards. What sucked was by then it was too late for me. I had already been kicked out and everyone knows that if you were to fight it you still would not get back in. I’ve never heard a story of someone getting back into the program once kicked out. I got into the Ailey summer program and had my new found focus. I worked harder than i ever had in my life that summer for 8 long hot ass weeks so that i could re audition for NCSA. Once the summer was over and all the students were going back to school i had no clue what was going to happen to me but i was ready for whatever. Oddly enough I was not worried because my dancing and focus had changed. If it did not work out at NCSA I would have gone elsewhere. What happened to me was Bebe the dance secretary called me and told me to come back to school and re audition and i got back into the program on September 11th. Its crazy to think that i can trace exactly when and where i had the turning point to work for i wanted and that happens to be Camille A. Brown! Her emerging was changed my interpretation of dance and made me focus on movement. Dance is just a word ya know?

Since then i have had the honor to come back to my school and choreograph a piece using a soloist from the San Francisco Ballet and another from Hubbard Street for our deans stepping down of the post and the new dean Ethan Stiefel stepping up. It was like hell had froozen over or something. Me the black swan of the program got to share the stage with some of my best friends and dancers from Boston ballet, ABT, NYCB and most important Camille and it was soo sweet. Everything had come back around to that moment. Camille had inspired me without ever knowing it to push forward and work and i got the chance to share the stage with her and other dancers that I respected. Not too mention Ethan Stiefel. It was so special.

This weekend Camille is presenting a full evenings work at the Joyce theatre in NY. I hear that all performances are sold out but if you are lucky enough to go to the show i hope that you take away something as inspiring from her work as i did.

I wish her all the luck in the word in all future endeavors. She is an amazing artists and person.

Weds with Reda

Reda from the Berrics folks. Not only is he a videographer/photographer he is now also an emmy award winning actor. Most recently seen on MY Name is Earl.

To my surprise Reda was not a deusche when i met him. Matter of fact, the exact opposite of a deusche. Not too sure what that would be but whatever it is, thats him.
