me at the MOAD

hey there.

Sorry about the lack of post as of late. Ive been very busy with projects and......you know how that goes. This Thursday im part of an evening at the MOAD Museum here in SF exploring black masculinity along with some other very talented Bay Area Artist. My exploration goes into a shared experience with us all develving into skin complexions and we are all affected by it at some point in time . I will be opening up the program with the world premiere of the BR-OO series (dance films) followed by a performance/installation titled Think in Tones that explores the said mentioned theme. I will be accompanied by a couple other dancers in my portion. Once the other artist are done with they're presentations we will be opening the floor up to Q&A which i kinda suck at so im sure it will be entertaining to here me ramble on whether i decide to answer your questions or not.

The Performance/Black Masculinity

see. think. dance. @ MoAD

Thursday, February 18, 2010 ::: 6pm doors. 6:30 performance.
MoAD ::: 685 Mission @ 3rd, SF
$10 adults, $5 students/seniors

On Thursday, February 18
, 4 artists take over the Salon @ MoAD to play with the implicit/explicit expressions of ethnicity + masculinity.

REWIND:
1955. NEW YORK: Arthur Mitchell made his debut as the first African-American to perform with the New York City Ballet. Performing in all the major ballets of the repertoire + partnered solely with white dancers, Mitchell could not perform these works on commercial television until 1965 + remained the only African-American in the company until 1970.

FAST FORWARD:
2010. SAN FRANCISCO: Black male artists are few in number but large in presence, as companies, choreographers, + spaces jostle to collaborate with those particular artists who embody Blackness + masculinity while offering the air of accessibility.

WHO are these men?
4 voices stand out:
Brian Gibbs, Dazié Rustin Grego, YAK films, + Folawole.
On Thursday, February 18, EXPLORE the overlap of race, gender, + performance.
ASK questions of the artists and of yourself.
DON’T SLEEP.

DANCEfirst! is a collaboration between see. think. dance. + MoAD to present a series of artist salons that engages DANCE as the primary medium.
Accentuating raw performance, local dancer/choreographers present experimental new work in the intimate setting of the MoAD Salon.
Each evening in the series ends with a discussion/reception to facilitate direct artist/audience exchange.
